An industrial recycling system for treated wood
Kurzfassung
A French engineering company has developed a recycling wood waste patented technology, able to recycle any kind of wood waste, whichever be the type of pollutant (heavy metals such as copper chromium arsenic, creosote, paint, glue, etc.), turning wood into a clean carbon powder, a raw material of interest for several applications (automotive, steel industry, water treatment). They currently operate a 10.000 tones/year pilot unit and are seeking to license their technology.
Details
The process is a three-step process:
- Crushing the wood (poles, sleevers, etc.) reducing it in small pieces (2-5 cm)
- Thermal low-temperature (< 400 °C) process, without combustion, distilling crushed wood and reducing the original hazardous wood waste to its mineral part. This mineral part is composed only of all the original carbon matrix of the wood and of 100% of the contaminants present in the initial hazardous wood waste
- Separating the carbon part and the other mineral parts by centrifugation
Innovative Aspects:
The patented process operates at low temperature, fully compliant with European environmental regulations. The energy issued from the wood distillation is used as fuel for the hot (<400 °C) neutral gas injected in the thermal reaction column. At the end of the process, we recover a mineral carbon powder (at least 28% of the initial wood weight) sold as raw material in the industry. The process is able to recycle any kind of wood waste, whichever be the type of pollutant (heavy metals such as CCA - copper chromium arsenic - creosote, paint, glue, etc.)
All the polluted and treated wood waste, classified as "hazardous Waste" in the EU since 2002, finds a environmentally friendly valorisation solution. Without combustion or incineration, the process "distils" the wood. It results in a clean mineral carbon powder, a raw material of interest for many industries (automotive, steel industry, water treatment, etc). The crusher, specifically developed by the company, doesn’t need any preparation of the wood waste: particularly, old wooden poles and sleepers are put down on a conveyor introducing directly them in the crusher. A two-people staff is needed to run a 10.000 T/year unit: computers and industrial automation tools drive automatically the process. Non-chemical or thermal specialists are able to operate the unit.
