Kurzfassung

A family-owned German company is committed in demanding high-tech development projects for super- and normal-conducting linear motors, speed-controlled motors, torque motors, solenoids and generators. The resulting highly advanced motor technology is available for replacing conventional mechanical or hydraulic drives in many industrial machines, e.g. textile machines, injection moulding, packaging, metal forming. Technical co-operations are sought for implementation in advanced applications.



Details

A medium sized family-owned German high-tech company has been specialised in electric motors for nearly 100 years, with a strong orientation towards innovation and new technologies. The company engages in ambitious privately and publicly funded development projects, and participates in the transfer of ideas and results by cooperating with universities and research institutes, both nationally and abroad.

Due to recent breakthroughs in magnetic materials as well as in the application of high-temperature superconductivity, the company was able to develop a new generation of electric motor technology with superior specifications. The technology can be customised to suit the needs of nearly all industrial applications having extreme requirements, like e.g. high-drive power density (kW per motor volume), high dynamics (fast acceleration and deceleration), high forces (up to 120 kN) at low speed/high torque (up to 60,000 Nm) at low rpm etc.

The new motor technology is an enabling technology that allows replacing conventional drives based on hydraulics or mechanical gears by direct application of customised electric motors. Potential application fields are all types of mechanically operating machines, like textile machines for weaving, knitting or finishing, handling machines for sorting, transporting or packaging, machines for injection moulding, for metal forming and rolling, etc.

In some specific applications like cold drawing of metal tubes, the company is working on methods to apply the electromagnetic force directly into the workpiece without any moving motor parts, an ambitious project that is still under progress.

The expertise of the German company is in the development and small-scale production of highly specialised and customised electromagnetic motors (from one individual motor up to small series of some 100 motors per year). For exploitation of their extensive know-how and expertise, they are interested in building new co-operations with producers of machines and equipment for various industrial sectors, looking for innovative solutions for specific mechanical tasks so far fulfilled by mechanical gears or hydraulic drives.

• Drive power density (kW per motor volume) up to 5 times higher than conventional electric motors
• Extremely high dynamics (fast acceleration and deceleration) e.g. 80,000 rpm/sec for normal and >300,000 rpm/sec for superconducting motors
• High forces (up to 120 kN) at low speed / high torque (up to 60,000 Nm) at low rpm
• Wear and maintenance free, high working life
• Easy speed/position control Replacing conventional drives in machines by customized direct electric motors significantly improves the machine performance. Depending of the type of motor, advantages are

• No need for hydraulics, gear wheels or helical worm gears
• Reduced lifetime costs and increased reliability by avoiding mechanical wear
• Increased precision due to avoidance of mechanical clearance at reversal of the direction of movement and possibility of direct electronic position control

Potential co-operation partners for new applications of electric motors should preferably be from industry. However, the company is also open to contacts with universities and research organisations having specific needs or specific expertise in electromagnetic motors or solenoids.
Specific area of activity of the partner:
Suitable industrial partners could be medium-sized producers of special high-end machines for different sectors, like textile, production of polymer parts, metal forming, packaging and handling, shredding and recycling etc. Special focus is on customised solutions in small-to-medium-scale number of units.

Task to be performed:
The partners should define the individual requirements of the specific application and co-operate in performing necessary customisation and adaptation of the new technology to replace the previous conventional solution. The partners should be qualified to handle the final solution and implement it in their products.
