Kurzfassung

A Polish institute developed plasma welding technology consisting of obtaining a durable welded joint with a concentrated plasma arc. Plasma welding is used for joining elements of wide range thicknesses, i.e. from dozens of µm up to more than ten mm. For welding very thin materials, i.e. of less than 1mm thicknesses, micro plasma welding is the main arc welding method. The welding process may be conducted either with or without using any metal fillers. Partners: metal and machine building.

The welding process may be conducted either with or without using any metal fillers. The main characteristic of plasma welding is easier obtaining of high-quality welds in comparison to other arc welding methods.

Innovative Aspects:
Plasma arc welding is an advance over the TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) process. Greater arc stability allows a much longer arc length (stand-off) and much greater tolerance to arc length changes.
In addition it provides a higher precision of work, narrow and clean weld, narrow heat affected zone, three times higher energy concentration and longer lifetime of the electrode.
As regards joint quality, efficiency of the process, economic terms connected with investment and operating costs, plasma arc welding is recognised as a sort of compromise between TIG and laser welding technology. • Plasma welding is applied in automotive, aircraft and spacecraft industries, food industry, precision engineering, medical technology and electronic engineering.
• Welding of thin-walled pipelines and elements made of acid-resistant steels in food industry.
• Welding of steel elements coated with zinc layer.
• Welding of acid-resistant steel chimney tubes.
• Welding of high-pressure fuel tanks for space shuttles.
