Kurzfassung
A northern German university offers a rapid method to screen food, feed and pharmaceutical products for microbial contaminants. The method can identify, quantify (even at low densities) and differentiate between living and dead organisms. The method is very sensitive, fast (30 min.), simple, cost-efficient and can be automated. Partners from the food industry and biotechnology are sought for technical co-operation, product/application development and further commercialization of the technology.
Details
A northern German university has developed a method for rapid detection of living microbial contaminants of food, feeds and pharmaceutical products. Results are obtained within 30 minutes.
The method functions thus:
1. microbial contaminant cells from production samples are enriched by immuno-magnetic separation (IMS).
2. the enriched and marked microbial cells are detected and counted by flow cytometry (allowing distinction of living versus dead cells).
Rapid detection of microbial contaminants prevents spoilage of production batches and prolongs shelf life of products.
Standard methods for microbial quality control are time consuming or require DNA samples that cannot distinguish between living and dead contaminants.
The method can be enhanced with other modules:
-for product sampling
-cell concentration and detection can be linked by flow injection analysis.
The method has been successfully implemented in both the dairy products and pharmaceutical industries.
Two types of partners are sought:
1. Partners for application development and/or direct implementation of the method.
2. Partners in technical cooperation for further automation of the system.
