High-adherence biocompatible coating
Kurzfassung
A research group from a Science University in Catalonia has developed a novel biocompatible coating to be used on orthopaedic devices and thus improve the adhesion of bone to prosthesis. This new coating allows best biocompatibility with comparison to similar materials. They are looking for industrial partners in the materials sector to develop or transfer the technology.
Details
A research group of a Science University in Catalonia has long experience in thermal spray processes and material development. They also work on coatings like TiO2, hydroxyapatite and so on. Hydroxyapatite (HAp) coatings are used extensively on orthopaedic devices to improve the adhesion of bone to the prosthesis. This approach increases the integrity and longevity of the implanted prosthesis. The crystallinity degree of the HAp coating is an essential characteristic in the implant’s behaviour. Nowadays, there is great interest for improvement of the hydroxyapatite adhesion and bone growth, as well as lower price of the production technique. The research group has developed an improved hydroxyapatite coating with better adhesion than conventional coating and good bone compatibility. The HAp coating developed can be obtained by the proper way of thermal spray routine in order to improve the amorphous/crystalline/nanocrystalline structure. The procedure to achieve the proposed goals, as know-how of the research group, includes a multistage deposition process. The research group is working on new coatings and alloys designs to improve fatigue resistance and increase biocompatibility.
Innovative Aspects:
A novel process involving several steps has been designed in order to get the best final structure. The amorphous/crystalline-nanocrystalline allows improving the adhesion, stability and osteo-integration of the coating.
The coating exhibits higher adhesion (by a factor of 2) than usual hydroxyapatite coatings and good biocompatibility.
