A Welsh company has developed a new technology for ground gas control especially for landfill sites and construction developments. The technology controls the movement of ground gases and vapours by manipulating air pressures and flows within the ground. It has been successfully implemented at a pilot site in the UK to protect previously un-developed land from migrating landfill gases.

Toxic or explosive gases in the ground are an inherent risk to many contaminated sites. They may be derived from natural or man-made sources including peat, chalk, landfill sites, sewers, mines, industrial spillage and oil wells.

Gases can be very mobile in the ground, moving centimetres or many metres a day. This migration may be diffused or concentrated in pathways such as zones of increased permeability (for example gravel layers), old mine workings, service trenches and groundwater flow. The technology is a new method for controlling gas migration.
