Water Remediation Advanced Oxidation Technology (AOT) based on a Hydro Non Thermal Plasma (HNTP) treatment concept
Kurzfassung
An Israeli SME developed a new and advanced technology for water remediation, especially for waters polluted with micro-organic molecules. The polluted water flows below an electrode that produces plasmas and creates strong oxidant agents. The advantages over other AOT systems are that radicals are produced in the same media as the polluted water and that it eliminates the need for pure O2, dried air & cooling systems required in other AOT systems. Joint venture & strategic are partners sought.
Details
Polluted drinking water and increasingly stringent regulations require new, innovative remediation technologies, especially for micro-organic pollution caused by Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), aromatic compounds, etc. Conventional water treatments are not always effective in removal of micro-organic pollution because of the physical and chemical characteristics. It is anticipated that Advanced Oxidation Technologies (AOTs) will be able to chemically treat them.
AOTs involve input of energy and/or chemicals, to produce highly reactive oxidizing species, particularly hydroxyl radical (HO•), ozone (O3), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and ultraviolet light (UV).
The offered technology is an AOT system based on the Hydro-Non-Thermal-Plasma (HNTP) treatment concept, built of three major components: reactor, generator and electrodes (figure 1). The polluted water flows inside the reactor in a thin film between the two electrodes (the ground electrode is the chamber floor on which the water flow and the second electrode are installed a few mm above the water surface). The plasma is formed in the space between the electrodes and the running water by a high voltage discharge of short electric pulse. The discharge produces strong oxidants agents and high-energy electrons, which generate an "electron wind" towards the water surface.
Figure 1 describes the result of an experiment conducted with 13 litres of extremely polluted water samples taken from shallow aquifers located in the vicinity of a petrol station. The water turbidity was over 300NTU, conditions that tend to detract from the efficiency of typical AOTs.
Detailed analysis of the water following MTBE (Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether) oxidation detected only a negligible formation of non-toxic oxidation by-products.
Innovative Aspects:
Innovative Aspects
• The company achieved competitive results in comparison with other's AOT systems, saving up to 70% in treating water contaminations such as TCE (Trichloroethylene) and MTBE, which are common ground water pollution.
• Based on a novel technology that is yet to be commercialised anywhere in the world.
• Full-scale system (up to 100-200 M3/hr) for ground (or surface) water remediation.
• Novel technology based on introducing energy to the water through plasma stream, which eliminates the need for pure O2, dried air and cooling systems.
Main Advantages
• Based on synergistic effect of oxidants agents such as ozone, hydrogen peroxide and UV in order to produce free radicals.
• The AOT, unlike other advanced water treatment (membrane, adsorption etc), is a distractive process that ends up with no by-product discharge.
• Reduce the risk for the production of hazardous by products such as bromate, TBA (Tertiary Butyl Alcohol) and others.
• No need for pure oxygen/dry air or UV lamps.
• Small footprint, simple maintenance, single-stage process.
• More effective than O3, less sensitive to water quality, controlled bromate formation.
• Effective when the waters are cleaned and the organic compounds absorbed UV.
• No bromate formation, inexpensive, no off-gas “handling", existing full-scale system.
