Kurzfassung

A small specialised private institute at a German University of Applied Sciences developed a new protection system agains mechanical impacts for varios applications, using metal-chain-patches alone or combined with different resin systems. It can be used for explosion protection, containment, safty casings of machines, ship and vehicle amour, explosion proof buildings, facades, booths and stands, personal protection etc. Partners sought are manufacturers of safety and security devices.



Details

The new chain mail material is able to very effectively protect against flying debris or to provide a containment during explosions or accidents. It can be used alone (e.g. due to its transparent character especially in combination with glass windows) or as reinforcement for composites. The main idea behind the system is to combine chain mail patches out of high strength material as the core together with a resin system with high strain absorption potential such like epoxy thermo-set.

The chain mail-system fits flexible to any shape and is able to take a high amount of energy due to debris impact. The epoxy system is in parallel stabilizing the geometrical shape of the chain-patch and allows the patch to expand in the impacted direction in order to absorb a high rate of kinetic energy. Together with the shape forming material the chain mail material will give a lightweight composite part of any form with even higher energy absorption rates than the chain mail alone.

The material of the matrix system can be thermo-set epoxy resins, or aluminum foam which is just melted around a layer of patches and stabilizing the crash and impact characteristics of the chain system.
The chain mail could provide substantial strength for ballistic protection for classes B4 and B5, which are very important for the automotive industrie. In addition to that, classes B7 and higher for military purposes can be reached by using special composite technigues.

Innovative Aspects:
Different metals and laser spot welding processes were introduced into the production cycle of chain mail patches. Due to this unique processes, dimensions of patches could be produced with a width of 2.5m and a length up to the customers wishes. Within the new production process it is also possible to increase the wire thickness up to 1.3mm and the ring diameter to 12mm. This gives a new, very strong configuration for special applications.
