New technique for continuous monitoring of microbiological compositions

A Dutch SME has developed a technology that enables to monitor specific bacteria continuously on line. This system can be used for detection of micro-organisms in water, beverages or air/gasses. The company is looking for a technical co-operation with companies active in desinfection, utility services and chemical industry. Watersuppliers and process water treatment companies for commercial agreement with technical assistance are also welcome.

A Dutch SME active in the field of bacteria detection in both fluids and gasses developped new applications for fast measurements in water.

The biomonitor continuously monitors the microbiological composition of a fluid on-line. For the on-line monitoring of bacteria with the biomonitor, a combination of techniques is used, based on Fluorescent In Situ Hybridisation (FISH), using bacteria-specific DNA-probes. When the probes are labeled on the r-RNA of bacteria they are visualized with an optical instrument. The images are automatically analysed by means of high tech software.

With the system total counts of bacteria (CFU), and/or groups of bacteria or specific kinds of bacteria can be detected, E.g. Lactobacillus or Legionella, but also specific bacteria within those groups, such as Lactobacillus Helvetica or Legionella Pneumophilia can be detected.
