Kurzfassung
A UK based multinational with operations across Europe is looking for new natural food preservative ingredients. The preservative must have minimal impact on the taste of a food and is intended as a safe natural alternative to synthetic compounds. The preservative must be approved for food use and available for testing (i.e. near market) for licensing to be considered.
Details
Synthetic antimicrobial compounds are increasingly coming under close scrutiny and natural alternatives are becoming more popular with consumers. For example, the widely used synthetic preservative, sodium benzoate, under some special conditions can form trace amounts of benzene (a known carcinogen).
While many natural essential oils and extracts from spices have antimicrobial properties, they tend to be pungent and alter the flavour of the food/beverage. Natural preservatives are sought which have little or no effect on the taste of a food product.
Technical Specifications / Specific technical requirements:
The natural preservative must have the following properties:
• Anti-microbial properties with minimum or no impact on intended flavour of foods/beverages.
• Preservative benefits by themselves or in combination with other ingredients for foods/beverages applications.
• Readily available for testing purposes.
• Approval to be used as preservatives in foods/beverages - prefer Generally Recognised As Safe (GRAS) listed ingredients.
