Fish friendly and power generating small overflow dam
Kurzfassung
An SME located in Eastern Saxony developed a "fish pass" to be integrated in existing and not deconstructable weirs (small overflow dams) and other transverse structures in streams and rivers to enable a free movement of fishes and other organisms up- and downstream. The technology is available as a pilot. The company is searching for partners for technical and commercial cooperation.
Details
An SME located in Eastern Saxony developed a special equipment to be integrated in existing and not deconstructable weirs and other transverse structures in streams and rivers to enable a free movement of fishes and other organisms up- and downstream.
The fish facilities currently used are characterised by cascaded artificial water courses. They often fail to meet the requirements due to the fact that these existing technologies do not accommodate all species of fish and are barely suitable for benthic invertebrates (organisms living on, in or near the bottom of flowing waters). Besides they offer few financial benefits to the operator and interfere with the waterbodies, which in turn affects the natural environment. As stated in the European Water Framework Directive, the EC-WFD, all inland waters must be ecologically converted by the year 2015.
All ecological and technical aspects of the transverse structures are described in detail in the "Handbuch der Querbauwerke" of the Ministry of Environment and Conservation, Agriculture and Consumer Protection of North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany).
State-of-the-Art is the usage of Natural fish facilities (like bypass,ramps,sliding,low-flow drainage gutter and pond system with roughness elements) and technical versions (like pond system, vertical-slot pass,Denil pass and fish lift and fish lock).
All these facilities have the following disadvantages in common
- they need to be built in addition to the transverse structures
- they use the residual flow
- they have low flows/ no main current
- many water organisms can hardly ever pass them
- they are very expensive and cannot be used to generate hydroelectric energy.
The new solution provides a fish migration aid having great water depth at all stages of the change in level, allowing migration of fish as well as macrozoobenthos, while simultaneously being able to provide devices for electrical energy generation within the fish migration aid. The modular fish migration aid for overcoming waterlines of different heights between water inlet and water outlet in artificial water retaining structures has a circular or square swirl basin, an inlet structure placed thereon and a drain opening disposed in the center of the swirl basin floor of the circular or segmented swirl basin. The swirl basin stands on a plurality of supports within the water drain, wherein the upper edge of the drain opening is below the waterline of the water drain. The rotatable impeller located above the drain opening in the swirl basin can be braked.
Thus the solution prevents all the disadvantages mentioned above and additionally generates electric power.
Innovative Aspects:
Cost saving operation because
- low-maintenance
- addtional, integratable generation of hydroelectric energy
- basically made from pre-fabricated parts
- materials: concrete resp. glass fibre reinforced plastics or metal
The technology guarantees safe migration for as many fish and other water organisms as possible without destroying the natural habitat and environment
