A German university has developed an advanced system for all-around measurement of surfaces. The system is far more affordable than previously possible due to the use of only one laser device and one camera. Furthermore, optical distortions, created by movements of the measured object, are avoided. The university is searching for licensees.

A university from Lower Saxony in Germany has developed a system for all-around 3D measurement of surfaces, which is based on only one laser device, one camera and two mirrors to enable the simultaneous measurement from three different perspectives.
Conventional systems have to be equipped with up to three lasers and cameras to realise 3D all-around surface measurements simultaneously. Other systems are equipped with one laser and one camera, the processing of 3D all-around surface measurement is done by a serial of three measurement processes and the movement of measured object or the sensor set. Movements of the measured object, i.e humans or other creatures, lead to optical distortions.
Due to the simultaneous measuring process of the offered system the risk of optical distortions, created by movements of the measured object, is avoided. Furthermore the speed of the measuring process is increased. The system is far more affordable than previously possible due to the use of only one laser device and one camera.
The system can be used in the apparel industry to produce new patterns, especially in the production of tailor-made garments and to adjust sizes to changes of people's different sizes and weights.
In the medical industry the system is suitable to produce prostheses and orthotics and in plastic surgery.
The system is also suitable for the entertainment industry as game characters or electronically reproduced movie characters can be designed more naturally.
