Kurzfassung
A French engineer has studied in laboratory the spruce and maple sound propagation characteristics. He has also developed a laminated sandwich structure with carbon fibre soundboard and a back of violin which have similar characteristics of sound emitted by traditional violins. The French engineer is looking for violin manufacturers who could be interested in these composites. He offers his know-how in sound propagation for such materials.
Details
A French engineer has developed dedicated composites with carbon fibre suitable for violin, cello and other instruments.
A violin is composed of several parts, notably the soundboard, which is traditionally composed of epicea, spruce, and the back, traditionally made of maple. The French engineer has studied the characteristics of epicea/spruce and maple in order to develop a soundboard and a back made of laminated sandwich with carbon fibres with similar characteristics.
Spruce presents a high speed of sound. This sound propagation is linked to spruce's fibres direction. The violin shape and the assembling of the different pieces of spruce have a direct influence on the sound propagation.
The French engineer has studied in laboratory the spruce and maple sound propagation characteristics. He has also developed a laminated sandwich structures with carbon fibre soundboard and a back of violin which have similar characteristics of sound emitted by traditional violins: in terms of sonority, of propagation of the sound, in acoustic response.
Innovative Aspects:
The French engineer has a dedicated know-how in laminated sandwich with carbon fiber suitable for violins and other music instruments.
Moreover, laminated composites offer similar advantages to spruce or maple:
- a low sensibility to climate variations as humidity or temperature
- no risk of damages caused by insects on this laminated compared to wood violins
- this composite is less fragile than wood
- using laminated sandwich structure allows a reproducibility of the characteristics and so the cost of violin could be seriously reduced.
