Modular rainwater system for use in residential and small commercial properties
Kurzfassung
A London-based company has developed a modular rainwater-harvesting system that can be installed or retrofitted into a small, urban spaces. The system provides storage space ine discrete steps, ranging from 200 to 3000 liters. It can be installed by professional or do-it-yourself installers, at low cost and without need for excavations. The company is looking for industrial partners in construction or retrofit for joint adaptation of the system to local needs or licensing opportunities.
Details
A London-based company has developed a modular rainwater collection system for retrofitting into small, urban spaces.
Conventional rainwater collection systems involve installation of large (1500+ liters), subterranean storage tanks, which are costly and difficult to install and don't provide value-for-money for single dwellings and small commercial properties. Unlike such conventional systems, this innovative and modular system can be installed at an entry level of £1000.-, where it is repaid by savings in water use within 10 years (for an average home).
The system provides two types of wall-mounted storage for the rain water. Both types are modular, allowing users to adapt the system to their needs.
- The smaller system stands appr 20 cm from the wall and stores 220 l/unit;
- The larger system stands appr 70 cm from the wall and stores 700 l/unit.
The storage tanks are attached to the drainpipes by a long-life, self-cleaning filter, which diverts 90-95% of incoming water to storage (the remainder is used to wash off debris), and which contains sewer backflow prevention.
The system can be installed in new-build aas well as retrofitted and is compatible with do-it-yourself (DIY) installers. The company provides support for both professional and amateur installers, not least by an online feature that helps end-users define the volume of rainwater they can catch and use.
The company is looking for partners in the construction and retrofit industry, who are interested to include the system in their portfolio and, where relevant, adapt it to other climates. In addition, the company would be interested to hear from builders' merchants and DIY stores that are interested in re-selling of the product.
Innovative Aspects:
With building regulations and housing code getting tighter, pressures on reducing consumption of water in both residential dwelling and commercial properties is rising constantly. Use of caught rainwater for flusing, laundry or outdoors activities immediately reduces the mains water consumed, beyond the changes achievable by behavioural change.
This system provides an easy solution for reducing the intake of mains water, without the need for large and costly construction.
The modular nature of the system allows end-users to adjust the system to fit their needs, in terms of storage space, rainwater catchment and predicted use.
The low cost of the sytem and its availability for DIY installing, allows home-owners to increase the value and environmental credentials of their homes at low investment.
