Kurzfassung

A Dutch SME produces a submergible low-energy device that supresses excessive growth of unicellular and filamentous algae by ultrasound. Sound frequency, intensity and shape of the pulse trains determine which types of algae are destroyed. The SME is looking to extend the range of species (e.g macroalgae) that can be controlled by this technology. Research collaboration into the shape of the pulse trains and frequencies is sought. Preferred partners would be research institutes or universities.

Details

In all types of freshwaterbodies (from fishfarms to swimming pools) excessive growth of algae can be a nuisance or even outright poisonous. On shiphulls the growth of biofilms or filamentous algae has influence on the resistance and hence speed and fuelconsumption. Selectively controlling algae in all these situations is an economically interesting field.

The long range (about 200m), high pressure ultrasound emitted by the device targets many different algal structures. Components of algae cells, within range, oscillate on the sound frequencies. This leads to tearing of different cell organelles (e.g. vacuoles tonoplast, cell wall or membrane and the gas vesicles of blue-green algae). Many frequencies are used simultaneously resulting in a broad spectrum of algae that can be controlled efficiently and within a very short time span.

The exact reaction of an algal cell to ultrasound depends, amongst others, on the type of algae. A very common differentiation between algae is between green algae and blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria.

The technology is efficient but could be made more selective and could be made to control more species. This requires research into new combinations of sound and algae or other unwanted organisms. Shape of the pulse train, frequency and intensity of the ultra sound and the shape of the waterbody are to be part of the research.
