Abstract
A Dutch company developed a half fabricate based on highly compressed natural cork granules and a binder system to produce cost reducing and durable composite cork ship decks. The technology enables the yacht- and shipbuilding industry to do a complete 50 m2 deck installation on a yacht in any design and in less than 2 days. The Dutch company is interested in contacts with potential partners in the yacht- and shipbuilding industry for commercial agreements with technical assistance.Details
Replacements for tropical woods have become one of the strong issues in yacht and shipbuilding sector and will only become more of an issue in the future. The Dutch company has been successful in the production an marketing of composite cork strips and special wooden components for the yacht- and shipbuilding sector. Based on this market position and technological know how an innovation was started, aiming at the development of a more durable and environmental friendly half-fabricate of cork based blocks as a basis material for custom designed and numerical controlled milled sheets for ships decks. The blocks are produced by extremely high compression of natural cork granules, bonded with an environmentally friendly synthetic binder system. The in-house production facilities employ integrated and continuous volume/weight control, specialty tools, and high-pressure machinery to create the required density. This approach generates uniform quality during the entire production process. The composite cork decks are extremely durable and insulating, all climate resistant and with a natural feeling when walking on it. By producing ships decks of natural cork, a substantial fixation of CO2 is achieved.
Innovative Aspects:
The product is a cost effective, mechanically durable, acoustical and thermal insulating and environmentally friendly replacement for the use tropical wood for ship decks. A substantial weight reduction is possible compared to wooden decks. The material is practically maintenance free.
