A large US company is looking for proposals for a high-speed packing machine that automatically distributes soft food into trays without damage. They are interested in contract development and equipment supply.
Details
The company has been engaging in research and development into prepared food packing equipments to automate the food distributing operation which is currently performed by hand.
Prepared food packing equipments are being developed by various companies. Extrusion type equipment and feeder ones are currently available. However, with extrusion type equipment, pressure is applied to the food in extruding and weighing then the food is smashed or cut. On the other hand, feeder type equipment has difficulty in handling foods with high distribution speed or in handling high moisture content. Therefore the distributing operation for many foods is performed by hand.
The company has evaluated many types of prepared food packing equipments, but has found no equipment that can set out food as elegantly as by hand.
Thus the company has issued this open request in order to accelerate their technology development and achieve commercialization more quickly.
The company anticipates acquiring the necessary technology from organizations that already possess it, or receiving promising development proposals based on joint development or contract development.
Anticipated approaches of rapidly distributing without smashing food include but are not necessarily limited to the following:
- Extruder type equipment that minimizes the force applied to food by using air.
- Extruder type equipment that has a function that mechanically expands food using a rotor.
- Feeder type equipment that increases the vibration rate to enhance transportation speed.
Required dishing quality is very high, so in addition to the existing technologies described above, proposals that include innovative ideas are also welcomed.
Technical Specifications / Specific technical requirements:
The desired machine for distributing and setting out food must satisfy the following requirements:
• Set out quality: The original shape of the food should be maintained.
The foods that are easily deformed such as boiled potatoes shall not be smashed
The foods that are long narrow such as macaroni shall not be cut into short.
• Speed of distribution: 20 packs/minute.
• Versatility: Can handle many of the following foods.
Fried potato, German potato, potato salad, macaroni salad, coleslaw, vegetable salad, risotto, baked beans, sliced mushroom.
• Washability: Can be disassembled and washed in 15 minutes without using tools.
• Amount of distribution: 10-100 g/pack.
• Error of distribution: = 3%.
This request especially emphasizes set out quality.
Therefore, proposals are welcomed for equipments that have functionalities to setting out food on a tray without smashing.

After such selection, the company will sign non-disclosure agreement (NDA) with the respondents, seek further information disclosure, and discuss specific development approaches. As necessary, the company will obtain samples from respondents to perform a detailed technical evaluation, and upon verification that the final target performance can be achieved, will sign a contract development agreement or joint development agreement with the respondent, and proceed to proof-of-concept and development.
