A Brussels based multinational active in the consumer goods sector seeks volatile non-irritating volatile solvents/emollients for its personal care products. Partners shall be able to identify suitable materials as well as to develop adequate supply chain, as the material is expected to be used at moderately high volume.
Details
To create dry feeling products like cosmetics, lotions or deodorants, 25-60% of a volatile non-aqueous solvent/emollient is typically used in the formula. These solvents/emollients must not damage the skin to enable daily long term usage.
Non aqueous volatile solvent/emollients provide a dry feeling high glide application aesthetic in cosmetics, skin care products and deodorants and then evaporates to release actives or pigments from the product film. Often the volatile solvents that provide this type of skin feel can defat or dehydrate the skin thereby creating a red rash or a stinging/burning sensation.
The multinational needs a material that can be applied at a rate of 1-4 mg per cm2 on skin without damaging the skin and that evaporates within 4 hours of application. The material must not defat or dehydrate the skin prior to evaporation (<4 hours after application). Moreover, it must either not penetrate the skin or have no adverse toxicological impact on the body if it does penetrate the skin.

The multinational looks for potential partners with the following capabilities : material identification and supply chain development.
The partner shall propose materials respecting the following criteria :
- The material must not irritate the skin in a fully occluded 3 day patch test.
- The material will be used at moderately high volumes so there must be a supply chain (either existing or potentially created) to provide between 4-10 thousand metric tons of material per year.
- The material should be available at approximately 3€ per Kg in the above volume range.
