A UK SME offers a marine data management and telemetry technology which enables the real-time transmission of marine and environmental data from buoys in inshore or offshore locations to a central-web based monitoring and control system. The solution is used in the UK and the company is seeking partners to license the technology or technical cooperation to adapt this technology for local circumstances.

Details

The technology is based on placing a system of sensors on a data buoy that can be floated in shallow or deep water which takes a number of readings from the surrounding marine environment. It is also enabled with a range of communication devices to transmit the data readings using GPRS, VHF or satellite communications to a central web-based control.

The buoy can be deployed in inshore and shallow water applications, when a buoy of 600 mm diameter can be used with multiple digital and analogue interfaces.

GPRS technology is used to upload data directly to a password protected, user web site at intervals configurable from 5 minutes to 24 hours. Communication with the buoy is bidirectional and factors such as update frequency, alarm levels and calibration factors can all be set from the web site without the need to go afloat.

If an alarm threshold is breached, notifications can be sent automatically to named users by email or text message. Numerous named users can be set up on this system.

There is no limit to the number of buoys that can be deployed simultaneously and each is individually addressable from the web site. All buoys are fitted with GPS, battery monitoring and solar panels as standard, with weather reporting, on board data logging and navigation lights available as an option. For areas with poor, or no mobile phone coverage, other available communication methods include satellite communications and direct radio transmission.

This technology has a number of applications including:

- Dredging: buoys can be used as sentinels to monitor turbidity at key positions and to alert port and dredging authorities by text message or email as soon as limits are exceeded

_ Aquaculture and environmental surveying: for establishing baseline data, monitoring transient events and safeguarding aquaculture sites in real time

- Sediment transport surveys: when fitted with a calibrated turbidity sensor, sediment mass can be determined at various stations, allowing deposition rates and positions to be calculated

- Meteorological reporting from inshore and offshore sites

- Current monitoring

- Acoustic monitoring

- Video monitoring
