Kurzfassung
A large US company is looking for proposals for milled stainless steel slag applications technologies. They are interested in licensing, product acquisition, contract research, proof of concept leading to scale up to manufacturing, joint development agreement.
Details
All steel refining operations produce an inorganic by-product called slag. Slag from conventional carbon steel is produced in much larger volumes than stainless steel slag. They have rather different chemical compositions.
There are a variety of known applications of blast furnace slag and carbon steel slag, but fewer for stainless steel slag. Milled stainless steel slag is a special case within this, having a particle size distribution much smaller than others. The milled slag can be prilled or compressed into larger, regular forms. It is also susceptible to surface treatment and chemical reactions under appropriate conditions.
In order to avoid accumulation of stainless steel slag or distribution to general fill applications, adaptation to carbon steel slag outlets or improvements on existing application technologies are required that make the material more economically or otherwise attractive, or totally new applications or approaches are required.
Possible approaches might include, but are not limited to:
-Road work materials
Asphalt aggregate
Road base
-Construction materials
Insulation-granular
Insulation-rock wool
Cement component
Brick-masonry
-Agriculture
Soil amendment
Fertilizer component
-Environmental applications
Acid scavenger
Acid mine drainage remediation
Deep mine fill
Calcium, silicon or iron source
Heavy metal precipitation
-Glass manufacture
-Mineral reconstitution via admixture, thermal or hydrothermal treatment that improves properties for any of the above or novel applications
-Other.
Approaches to be avoided or encouraged:
One of the largest barriers to the use of this material is transportation cost. Approaches that create higher value can justify higher transportations costs. Proposals for material applications that do not offer a sales value, or worse, require payment to handle material without a counterbalancing sales value, should be avoided. High tonnage applications are encouraged.
Technical Specifications / Specific technical requirements:
The successful technology will:
- Provide a safe, valued destination for milled stainless steel slag
- Be economically favored over general fill applications
- Be applicable to a range of stainless steel slag compositions
- Not create a hazardous waste of high volume landfill by-product.
Technologiesektor | - Glas - Eisen & Stahl, Stahlwerke - Bergbau |
Kooperationstyp | - License Agreement - Joint further development - Testing of new applications - Adaptation to specific needs - Absolutely novel process Responses from companies (large or small, startups, etc.), hospital or academic researchers, contract research institutes, pharmacologists, nutritionists, medicinal chemists, drug formulators, biochemists, physiologists, alternative or traditional medicine providers, etc., from around the world are all welcome. ANTICIPATED PROJECT PHASES OR PROJECT PLAN Due to the variety of possible responses, project phases will be designed based on the technology proposed and stage of development. Proposed phase descriptions and recommendations are welcomed, especially when aimed at earliest possible commercialization. Phase 1 – proof of concept by October 2011 Phase 2 – joint development of products to be started by November 2011. Note that this profile requires a convincing solution proposal.
