A large US company is looking for proposals for image sensors with a global shutter and wide dynamic range of >100 dB. They are interested in component supply, contract development and joint development.

The company seeks to adapt image sensors for capturing fast-moving objects.
Image sensors with wide dynamic range or global shutter have been developed for automobile applications, etc. However, CMOS sensors that satisfy both wide dynamic range and global shutter are not commonly available. For CCD sensors, enabling the wide dynamic range requires additional development efforts.
The company has sought image sensors that may meet their requirements but has not yet found a suitable product. In order to accelerate development and time to market of their target system, the client has issued this request throughout the world. The client anticipates not only offerings of developed image sensors but also of development proposals from organizations that already possess key enabling technologies.
Anticipated approaches include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:
• Wide dynamic range image sensor
- Image sensor consisting of multiple set of pixels with different sensitivities
- Image sensor with large enough pixel that can capture a wide dynamic range scene
• Global shutter image sensor
- CMOS image sensor with global shutter integrated to each pixel.
Technical Specifications / Specific technical requirements:
A global shutter is a system that exposes every pixel in the image chip for each frame, as opposed to a rolling shutter system that scans across the frame vertically or horizontally. Global shutter systems are advantageous for high-speed cameras.
Requirements for image sensors are as follows:
• Electric shutter: global shutter
Preferably, the shutter speed can be specified from 1/100 to 1/2000 sec.
• Dynamic range : >100 dB
Preferably, the knee point of the sensor can be controlled via external I/O.
• Pixel count: >VGA (640x480)
Can be either color or monochrome
• Image sensor frame rate: >60 fps
The two most critical requirements are the global shutter and the wide dynamic range. The other requirements are not mandatory. Proposals are welcomed that have been already prototyped and can be demonstrated through image capturing.

ANTICIPATED PROJECT PHASES OR PROJECT PLAN The client will review proposals and possibly ask clarifying questions before selecting suitable candidates for collaboration. The client will execute non-disclosure agreements (NDA) with selected candidates, seek further information disclosure, and discuss possible development approaches. The client will seek to obtain, if necessary, captured image data in order to perform more in-depth assessment of the proposed technologies. Upon verifying potential feasibility of the proposed technology, the client will execute a purchase or a contract development agreement with the best respondent, and proceed to steps such as developing and/or validating the technology. In a development stage toward commercialization, the client may involve its existing partner, if necessary. Specifics of the collaboration will be determined upon consultation with the parties concerned. Anticipated period toward the commercialization is one year.
