Kurzfassung

A Hungarian SME has developed a complex system for 2D DataMatrix code labelling, checking and validation. Main advantages: highly accurate and reliable labelling. All processes are programmable and controllable by a touch screen. Technology can be best used by pharmaceutical companies. The company is searching for industrial or service partners for technology development and development of toxin-free black ink. Technical cooperation or licence agreements are preferred.



Details

This Hungarian enterprise applies different labels and markings (data, codes, symbols and figures) onto products. The company trades with and commissions inkjet markers, laser engravers, label printers and barcode readers.

Product identification requires the indication of an ever-increasing data amount on a continuously shrinking space. Barcodes have only monodirectional coding. To the contrary, 2D DataMatrix code allows for two-dimensional data recording because it uses 2 perpendicular directions for information storage. Similarly to black and white segments of a chess table, DataMatrix consists of base cells. Several thousands of characters can be stored this way. This method enables precise tracking of medication all throughout the supply chain (boxes can be identified even when they reach the shelf).

Technology is based on image reading. Main components:
• industrial labelling device, with a target software
• image processing camera system, with a target software
• servo motors
• freely programmable controller (PLC)
• industrial computer with touch screen control
• system software

The labelling device is a thermo inkjet printer which uses gravity fed ink filled into conventional cartridges. Central controlling unit electronically charges the ink drops which boil and are ejected from the cartridge. Ink drops are boiled by the device at different temperatures. Initially, the ink cartridge contained its own electronics module, however, the cartridge and its control unit were physically separated. The control module has been integrated into the complex system control.

The high resolution camera system can reliably film any object that passes on the fast moving conveyor belt underneath the machine. Based on the number of successful readings (successful readings per 100 readings), the system categorises (A, B, C) code printing quality. Packaging label quality assessment data are validated and stored by an appropriate processing algorithm.

Touch screen messages are editable. The touch screen can display the product database and target software of each component. Faulty printing operations can be traced back. The system saves all touch data.

Specifications:
• output: 75-80 pcs/min
• aggregated number of label failures: 0.5-2 %

Tasks to be resolved: technology development and development of toxin-free black ink.

Innovative Aspects:
No similar marking device (programmability, accuracy) has so far been developed. Better performance (75-80 pcs/min) than competitors' similar devices (50-60 pcs/min).
