Kurzfassung

A large US company is looking for proposals for external energy-induced reversible adhesives that can be applied to touch display modules for portable devices. Of interest are adhesives that can enable reuse of the components in the modules as well as provide long-lasting adhesion in the portable device products. They are interested in development contract, joint development, licensing, material supply.



Details

The client seeks to obtain reversible adhesives that can be used for the assembly of display and touch panel modules. The ability to rework devices that have bonding failure due to dust or air voids would produce substantial cost
savings. The client has not yet identified adhesives that can survive the use of touch display devices in the field and can be debonded without compromising the reusability of the components. On the other hand, reversible adhesives have been deployed and studied for various applications, e.g., underfill agents for LSI chips, temporary bonding adhesives for backgrind of Si-wafer.
The client anticipates proposals not only for established technologies but also for promising technologies based on development contract. The anticipated business opportunity at successful mass production stage would be several million touch panel devices per year.

Anticipated approaches include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:
Adhesives containing microcapsules that can expand, e.g., if irradiated with microwave
energy
Adhesives containing substances that enable reversible cross-linking of the resin, e.g., if induction heated
Adhesives containing substances that rapidly lose the adhesion force, e.g., if irradiated with UV light.

Technical Specifications / Specific technical requirements:
Requirements are as follows:
Surfaces to be bonded: top glass substrates of display modules and substrates of touch panel modules
Curing process conditions:
If heat curing, <80°CIf UV curing, approximately <3,000 mJ/cm2
Bonding area size: >5x10cm2
Bonding thickness: <100um
Transparency: must at least have potential to develop transparent adhesive. Goal is white light transmittance >90% at commercialization.
Adhesion: display and touch panel modules can be bonded with each other without degradation over the product lifespan
Reversibility: can be debonded using external energy, e.g., light, electricity or magnetism, without compromising reusability of display and touch panel modules.
Form of adhesive: either liquid or tape/film.
Satisfying all the requirements is not mandatory at the proposal stage.

Responses from companies (large or small, startups, etc.), hospital or academic researchers, contract research institutes, pharmacologists, nutritionists, medicinal chemists, drug formulators, biochemists, physiologists, alternative or traditional medicine providers, etc., from around the world are all welcome.

ANTICIPATED PROJECT PHASES OR PROJECT PLAN

The client will review submitted proposals and possibly ask clarifying questions or request supporting data before selecting the most suitable candidates for collaboration. The client will execute non-disclosure agreements (NDA) with selected respondent(s), if necessary, seek further information disclosure, and discuss specific development approaches. The client will select best candidates through detailed technical discussion, trial experiments by obtaining available samples from the proposers, etc.
When the preliminary feasibility to satisfy the requirement is verified, the client will kick off the project. Depending on the level of selected technologies, the project may start either from the phase 1 (establish technology) or phase 2 (commercialization). Specifics of any collaboration will be determined through consultation with the concerned parties.
