The system is already operational on concrete manufacturing plants and in tobacco trading centres. A Swiss independent engineering and development company has a strong background and experience in the field of sensors and industrial controls. It develops and sells different proprietary products in the area of electronic test and measurement, more specifically in microwave-based measurement systems for water content in different materials.
The core of the instrument is an innovative microwave measurement principle. Its particularity is the fact that in contrast to other existing systems, the entire thickness of the material is analysed due to a double antenna set-up. At the same time, the system offers the advantage to perform the measurement without any contact to the material under test. As a consequence, the absence of any abrasion guarantees a superior lifetime. The interaction of the microwaves with the material is directly related to the moisture content. This interaction is recorded in real time and sent to a PC for storage and graphical presentation of the moisture profile. Due to a refined signal modulation procedure and digital processing (DSP) of the measurements, the instrument delivers a reproducible and reliable measurement of the moisture content. The advanced processing and analysis software eases the monitoring of the material quality/cost ratio. Thanks to its numerous standard interfaces, the instrument can be integrated easily into existing automation systems where it allows on-line moisture control. The statistics produced out of the measurements can be made available to the plant's data network (LAN).
The instrument can be used in testing such materials as aggregate, cement, sand, tobacco, food, flour, ceramics, leather, cotton, wood, coal, etc. The system is already implemented on concrete manufacturing plants and tobacco trade centres. For instance, in concrete plants, the water content can be monitored at three different production levels: at the entrance to the silo (for example on the moving conveyor belt), at the exit of the respective silos, and in the mixer. In addition, a portable version of the instrument allows measures of small material samples.
