Kurzfassung

An Italian SME developed an automatic system for heliports to allow helicopter pilots to carry out safe and comfort flight operations during landing & take-off. The application can be placed in hospitals, heliports and helipads, airports, hotels, business centres, industrial areas, etc. Venture capitalists, manufacturers of photovoltaic panels, low-power-consumption lights, software developers for monitoring & manufacturers of terrorism detection systems are sought to develop the system.

Details

On a market where helicopters are frequently used, it is necessary to create infrastructures for landing and take-off in complete safety, noise reduction and flight comfort, and to have ground services with all weathers conditions.
Since passenger comfort also depends on pilot stress, the system has been developed to facilitate and make easier landing and take-off in all weather conditions.
Today it is essential to have helipad or heliport infrastructures located in the inner city, in hospitals, in business centres, in harbours or in high mountains. In every situation in which helipads/heliports are constructed, it is necessary to think not only of passengers’ comfort and safety but also of surrounding structures, buildings, streets, mountains, etc., and also to respect environment by lowering pollution emissions. The system can be placed in hospitals, heliports, and helipads where it is not possible or not worthwhile to have specialised operators from the aeronautical sector. The presence of the system together with specialised personnel can be helpful to avoid excess workload for operators.
The system is completely automatic and allows the pilot to reach the heliport and to know previously the current weather information and the functional state of the system.
Depending on its radio code, weather information can be heard “via voice” by the pilots, who can choose to proceed to the heliport if there are the right weather conditions to ensure a safe landing, or to direct to another helipad or heliport with better conditions. This weather information can be followed by other information about possible sanitary assistance.
Once activated, the application gives its exact position on ground by visual signals, emitted by a xenon light source. Each heliport or helipad can be distinguished from the others by an exact sequence and Morse code of its flash beacon.
An automatic fire fighting system is installed and prepared for a possible air crash on the platform, so that it immediately operates to extinguish the fire within two minutes, saving human lives as it is recommended by ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) international regulations. The system is developed to protect the environment with a sophisticated collection system for liquid and foam that can be dangerous for the surroundings, as specific regulations recommended. It has a refuelling system and a lighted approach path with automatic light-up calibrated on the safest descent corridor to reach the helipad in every weather condition and either in daytime or night. The Approach Path Indicator is provided with an intensity light regulation system and includes an anti-damaged trim system. In case of any possible deviation from the correct path angle, the indicator will switch off immediately to avoid a dangerous wrong descent glide.

Innovative Aspects:
The system has been developed to operate as a system, therefore not just a platform with some lights and a wind cone. To guarantee easier management it is controlled by a central unit and provided with safety measures to reduce the probability of an accident.
The application requires just little maintenance. There is no need to have specialised personnel on the ground to assist during landing and take-off. Therefore it implies money savings. Moreover, if an accident happens during landing or take-off, the main rotor and the rotor blades could break, and the broken pieces could hit the specialised personnel, making them no longer able to operate to extinguish the fire. Thanks to the application the accident impact can be lowered. It is easy to use and does not require any pilot training.
The system can help avoiding human errors by making helipads safer - therefore it is projected and installed according to customer needs.
