KurzfassungA German university has developed a new technology for wireless monitoring of constructions and construction components. The device uses RFID chips with modified antennas to provide a fail safe monitoring of constructions and components. Damages can be identified in an early stadium to save repair costs. The university is searching for a licensee for commercial applications.
Monitoring of constructions and construction components keeps costs for repairs and maintenance low. Especially undetected corrosion damages in reinforced concrete or in beams can lead to expensive repairs of construction damages. Currently monitoring of constructions is often done by visual inspections, therefore the estimation and detection of damages is affected by the subjectivity of the inspecting person. Current monitoring processes often require transport of measuring equipment or the transport of components into laboratories to check them for damages. Other available permanent monitoring systems are equipped with connection cables. Cable damages may cause interruption of the electrical power supply and data transmission, resulting in disruptions of inspection protocols.The invention in construction monitoring a German university has developed is based on equipment for condition monitoring of components and constructions in or on the object, devices for signal processing by RFID are integrated. Signals are transmitted by antenna to the RFID receiver, changes of the construction conditions lead to changes of the signal. By use of several RFID-chips, the location and dimension of damages or corrosion can be detected.Besides monitoring of construction elements made from reinforced concrete or construction components like beams, the technology is also applicable to detect damages of machine components or vehicle components.Innovative Aspects:The technology for the wireless monitoring of constructions and construction components offers:- A fail safe method for automatic monitoring of critical load peaks.- Monitoring of components prone to corrosion, like steel components of reinforced concrete.- No disruption of the monitoring process caused by problems in signal transmission or power supply due to cable damages.- Absence of an external power supply.
