KurzfassungA large US company is looking for proposals for distance measuring sensors that are robust in dusty/harsh environments. The sensor system should measure short-range distances from tens of centimeters to several meters, with a resolution of 10 mm. The key challenge is to be robust in the presence of a high particulate environment (dust, oil, water). They are interested in contract development, joint development and product supply.
The company is engaging in research and development in relation to short-range distance-measuring technology.
There are many methods of using light in a short-range distance measurement sensor. However the problem is that an optical sensor cannot be used when there is a lot of dirt.
There are sensors that are not affected by dirt, such as millimeter wave radar, microwave radar, or ultrasonic sensor. However, the problem with millimeter wave radar and microwave radar is that they cannot be used for short distances. On the other hand the problem with ultrasonic sensors is that they are affected by environmental noise and temperature variations.
The company has tried distance measurement technologies that use various methods, but has not obtained a sensor that has the functionality needed for application. Therefore, they have issued this open request in order to further accelerate their technology development and achieve commercialization quickly.
The company anticipates acquiring the necessary technology from organizations that already possess it, or receiving promising development proposals based on joint development or contract development.
Once the product is commercialized, the company expects to produce about 1
1 000 000 units per year when it is commercialized.
Anticipated short-range distance measurement sensors include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:
- Millimeter wave radar that can perform short range distance measurement
- Ultrasonic sensors those are resistant to noise
- Electromagnetic induction sensors with an expanded measurement range.
Achieving the desired measurement capability is extremely difficult, so proposals are welcomed that incorporate innovative ideas in addition to the existing technologies listed above.
Technical Specifications / Specific technical requirements:
Sensor technologies of interest include:
- Microwave radar
- Millimeter wave radar
- Ultrasonic sensor.
It is anticipated that an environmentally robust sensor will be used under the following conditions:
• Environmental robustness: sensors have to robust to dirt, noise, temperature, and humidity
- Dirt: Atmosphere containing dust at a level at which humans could not live long, and exposure to water or oil is expected as well.
- Optical methods are not under consideration.
- Noise: 70 dB or more environmental noise is expected
- Temperature: -25°C to 70°C
- Humidity: 35% to 95%
The following are the requirements for a sensor that can work under the above environment:
• Distance measurement performance:
- Distance resolution: 10 mm
- DIstance range: several tens of cm to several m
• Response time: = 10 msec
The particular emphasis of this request for proposal is environmental robustness and distance resolution. Proposals are welcomed for sensors such as millimeter wave radar, microwave radar, and ultrasonic sensor, which are robust against the presence of dirt, and can implement a distance resolution of 10 mm or better, even if they cannot strictly meet the other specifications given above.

Responses from small to large companies, academic researchers, other research institutes, consultants, entrepreneurs or inventors are welcome. The technology sought may either be ready for testing and transfer to commercial use or require further development.
The company will ask further questions concerning promising proposals in order to select respondents who may become collaborative partners. After such selection, the company will sign non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) with respondents, seek further information disclosure, and discuss specific development approaches. The company will obtain samples from respondents as necessary, in order to perform detailed evaluation of the technology, and upon verification that the final target performance can be achieved the company and the respondent will sign a contract development agreement or joint development agreement and proceed to steps such as proof of concept and development.
It is anticipated that verification of application will take one year. After that, it is anticipated that development toward commercialization will take about two years.
