Kurzfassung
A large German Research Institute has developed a process for optical measurement of depth profiles. The main advantage of this technology is the usage of movable mirrors so that an easier and also cheaper characterization of a depth profile is possible. Thus, the process is especially applicable in chemical industry and measuring industry as well. The institute seeks either a license agreement or a technical cooperation.
Details
In studies of the surfaces of an object, both the structure and the depth profile of the surface are of interest. This includes stratification of the object, thickness and properties of the individual layers, and potential defects, such as cracks or inclusions. The common methods of quantitative characterization of a depth profile are expensive and, as a rule, do not work non-destructively.
The new optical measurement process that has been developed by a German Research Centre uses a movable mirror arranged between the excitation laser beam and the object. This mirror guides the excitation and the measuring laser beams together to a semi-permanent optical filter which lets the excitation laser beams pass in such a way that they impinge on the object, while the measurement laser beams are reflected and pass through a collector lens before impinging on the detector.
The new measurement process can be used to examine the depth profiles of industrially manufactured layers in quality control, or of paintings, scripts, or monuments in history (of arts). Other applications can be found in medicine, pharmaceutics or cosmetics, for instance, when tracing the three-dimensional penetration of active substances into the skin.
Innovative Aspects:
In comparison to existing measuring methods of depth profiles the new technology for optical measurement of depth profiles uses a movable mirror and is cheaper, non-destructive and usable in a wide range of applications.
