The platform created by an Italian SME, allows the creation of a network of Biorepositories of Centres for Biological Resources between partners capable of introducing themselves as “spoke” in the various “hub” that are being implemented both nationally andinternationally. It will ensure the respect for regulations and enforce the use of the right standard and terminology, conceptual models and operational procedures, allowing database interoperability, thanks to sophisticated semantic and integrationtechnologies.
The platform is the result of the increasingly growing demand of translational and applied research studies in the medical and industrial field based on the assessment of biological samples with homogeneous pathologies, clinical features as well as collection and maintenance processes. Biological samples with their more or less vast and detailed store of information are in fact increasingly needed to start up new researches, new products, new drugs, new instruments for traceability and logistics, new diagnostics and new reliable information. In order to set up a real biobank, it is not only necessary to collect and possibly handle biological material in the most technically appropriate way but it is also important to provide the original clinical cases with extensive clinical records stored thanks to a computer support allowing to find all data. The present availability of biological materials is insufficient, scattered among several centres and therefore unable to meet such an increased demand.
Innovative Aspects:
The semantic software platform will not only ensure the respect for regulations but also the right standard of terminology, conceptual models and operational procedures so as to allow database interoperability with the aid of sophisticated semantic questions for an accurate data mining on all samples, their supporting structures as well as discarded samples, to be used in another centre.
