Kurzfassung
A large German Research Institute has developed a measurement and sensing system to improve the handling of everyday production failure. The system works with local changes of the electric sensor properties and allows for long-term measurements of pressures and deformations in spatial distribution along the conductors. The institute is looking for a license agreement or joint further development.
Details
Requirements on a production company are clear: It has to work quicker, better, and cheaper than competitors, while maintaining or even improving the quality. The biggest challenge lies in handling everyday production failures.
The sensor consists of stretched conductors that are insulated from each other by an elastic medium. Mechanical deformations of the sensor generate local changes of the electric sensor properties that are measured by means of time-domain reflectometry (TDR). Using this method, an electric pulse is fed into the sensor. At points, where the conduction properties of the sensor are changed (e.g. conductor geometry or the dielectricity coefficient of the material due to humidity), part of the pulse is reflected. These reflections are recorded by measurement instruments and evaluated.
This method, which has been developed by a German Research Institute, for the first time allows for long-term measurements of pressures and deformations in spatial distribution along the conductors. Another advantage of the sensor consists in the fact that it may also be used for the combined measurement of pressure and humidity distribution, which so far has been achieved by separate systems and different processes only. The sensors may have a length of up to 20 m and are highly suited for the permanent monitoring of longer distances. The sensor can be adapted to the environment using various materials, it is robust. Production is cheap due to simple design.
Innovative Aspects:
The sensor system
- allows for long-term measurements of pressures and deformations in spatial distribution along the conductors
- is highly suited for the permanent monitoring of longer distances
- can be adapted to the environment using various materials
- has cheap production costs
