KurzfassungA Spanish public research organisation has developed a rendering mortar with high acoustic performance. Mortar is based on cement and petroleum coke. The use of petroleum coke is a attractive alternative to replace mineral wool as acoustic insulation in all types of construction elements. This is due to its physical properties and by not having the disadvantages of toxicity of mineral wool. Industrial partner interested in a license agreement to exploit this technology is sought.
Achievement of noise insulation is one of the biggest challenges currently facing the construction sector. Consumer demand increases day by day and soundproofing is a key requirement in new constructions.
Nowadays different environmental noise absorbers are available on the market. The most used of these soundproofing is the mineral wool. However, mineral wool has important drawbacks such as its loss of properties when gets wet or damp and its degradation over time. In fact, mineral wool degradation is suspected of causing toxicological problems such as those produced by asbestos. This might result in the prohibition of mineral woods as noise absorber and calls for looking for alternatives to noise insulation materials commonly used today.
The present invention herein describes the use of coating mortars based on cement and petroleum coke as an alternative product to sound attenuation. Petroleum coke, solid byproduct of petroleum refining process, is a material that thanks to its physical and structural properties (real and apparent low density, high open porosity, granular form and malleability when mixed with a cement matrix) can be integrated as mortar into any kind of building elements showing high sound-insulating performance.
Additionally, petroleum coke mortar used in double walls enclosures with air chamber attenuate the effect of the resonance due to its generate a thickness and surface density difference between the walls.
Petroleum coke behaves like a dry inert when mixed with cement and does not cause morphological changes in mortars.
•Petroleum coke mortars improve 3dBA sound insulation compared to mineral wood ones. Additionally, and unlike this, petroleum coke can be cleaned with water and does not lose its noise mitigation properties over time.
•The lower coke rendering thickness (15 mm) with respect to commonly used (50-80 mm) represents a savings in material cost and increasing of building area. Besides, the projection system used for mortar application manages to reduce work time lowering final cost.
•Additionally to acoustic insulation, petroleum coke mortars coatings guarantee building waterproofing.
